the takei - shou sugi ban side table
the takei is a one-of-a-kind side table built from shou sugi ban pine, then inlayed with a plaster top and thick, solid brass leg braces.
shou sugi ban originated in japan in the 18th century primarily as way to treat wood to make it weatherproof, the technique – which involves charring a wood surface to render it a deep charcoal-black – has caught on recently as a treatment for contemporary exteriors and indoor furnishings alike. the gravitas imparted by the process and finished result are undeniable, a blackening of the wood that reveals clean, distinct lines and an inherent textural beauty. the takei’s shou sugi ban frame is sealed with a matte poly to protect its rich color. the takei’s top is cast from plaster of paris and the leg braces are fashioned from solid thick brass stock and inset flush with the legs.
the takei measures 18″ x 18″ x 18″. The leg and top boards measure 1.5″ square.
